Frequently Asked Questions

Below you will find a list of the most common questions asked of GVS and our answers to them. This page provides a lot of helpful information not found in the rest of the site. We invite you to direct further questions to the Webmaster.

What other organizations do similar work to yours?

GVS is proud to cooperate with and support other organizations with similar goals. Here are a few groups we suggest you take a look at:

Afghan Friends Network
Afghan Friends Network was founded in San Francisco Bay Area in 2002 as a nonprofit organization to enable friendships, networks, and partnerships between individuals, organizations and cities in the United States and Afghanistan.

How are GVS and Mercy Corps International related?

Mercy Corps has been beneficial in giving GVS logistical support, advice, and assistance but the two are not formally associated.

Why are there not as many girls in the schools as there are boys?

Due to previous conditions in Afghanistan, many families are still worried about sending their daughters to school. This is quickly changing as more and more people are noticing the quality and integrity of our schools.

Does GVS have a religious orientation and/or does GVS promote any religious beliefs?

Our organization's goals are education, sanitation and the well-being of the people of Afghanistan. We do not have any formal religious orientation nor do we promote any particular lifestyle.

What religion are the students at the schools?

Afghanistan has the highest percentage of Muslim population in the world. It can safely be concluded that all of the students attending our schools are practitioners of Islam. However, people of all backgrounds are welcome.

What percentage of each dollar donated goes to the schools?

GVS is entirely a volunteer operation when it comes to administration. Even this website is managed free of cost. The vast majority of all funds go directly to our efforts in Afghanistan. Recent numbers show that over 97% of donated funds have gone directly to the children of Afghanistan.

What types of donations are you accepting?

Previously our organization was hoping for more cash donations as transportation of other items would be costly. We have, however, secured a method through which all transportation of donated items is free. For this reason, we now welcome all types of donations including clothes, books, miscellaneous school and health supplies, sports equipment, etc. If you are donating items, please contact us using our contact form.
